Hello clean-air-and-climate friends: Please join us on zoom (link available via email) from 7-7:40pm MT every other Wednesday night: W May 25, W June 8, etc. All are welcome! We’ll talk about the Four P’s—Policy, Plan, Purchasing Power, and People—as we prepare to qualify for the Nov 2024 ballot by collecting signatures from February to November, 2023. (Mark your calendars, and follow the previous link if you’re new to the campaign and want to get caught up!)

Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment: Thanks to UPHE for signing up as a Friend of the Campaign!

Meet the summer team: As noted last time, Jack Podolsky and Casey Hansen will be working for us part-time as Campaign Strategists, and we are adding Ronan Carrier and London Kelley. Here’s a brief intro from Ronan: “I was born and raised in Salt Lake City Utah, I am currently doing my undergraduate degree in BC Canada. I collected signatures for Clean the Darn Air in 2019 as a high school student so I am excited to be back working on this team to help make Utah’s air cleaner!” And here’s an intro from London (joining as a U of U Hinckley Institute intern): “I’m a freshman studying political science and international studies at the University of Utah, with a minor in peace and conflict studies. I grew up in Lehi and currently live in Highland. I played volleyball and I love to read, and in the winter, I love snowboarding.” Welcome to the team!!

Plan: Please send us events to add to our signature-gathering plan for 2023. FYI Casey Hansen is focusing on the 6 state senate districts south and east of Utah Lake; Jack Podolsky is focusing on the 7 state senate districts west of I-15 between SLC and Provo; London Kelley is focusing on the 9 districts east of I-15 between SLC and Provo; and Ronan Carrier is focusing on the 7 districts north of SLC. (Recall that we need to hit signature targets in 26 of the 29 state senate districts to make the ballot.)

Purchasing Power: We’ve raised almost $3k toward the $5k matching challenge we got from a donor who supports “small teams doing creative and strategic activism” on issues ranging from internet privacy to climate action. You can help by making an online donation or by sending a check payable to Clean The Darn Air, PO Box 522468, SLC UT 84152. (Note that donations to political campaigns won’t get you a tax deduction, but they will get you our eternal gratitude!)

In the news: Jan Kennington recommends an AP article that appeared in the Tribune: “Global pollution kills 9 million people a year, study finds”. And for those who are skeptical that ballot measures can make a difference in Utah, check out Robert Gerkhe’s column “How one young man changed Utahns’ minds on medical marijuana without saying a word”.

Regards,
Yoram and the Clean The Darn Air team
