Please join us on Zoom (link available by email) from 7-7:40pm MT every other Wednesday night: W Nov 17, W Dec 1 etc. All are welcome! We’ll talk about policy development and outreach efforts as we prepare to qualify for the Nov 2024 ballot by collecting signatures from about Feb 27 – Nov 27, 2023. (Mark your calendars, and follow the previous link if you’re new to the campaign and want to get caught up!)

Redistricting: The legislature ended a contentious special session by using the 2020 census results to create new district maps; this is extra important for us because we need to hit signature targets in 26 of the 29 state senate districts to qualify for the ballot. We will learn more about the exact signature targets in these districts in the months ahead, but for now we’ve got the map below, with lots of details here (including a comparison with the old map). The big picture, as expected, is that above-average population growth has made the areas around St George and the southern part of the Wasatch Front (i.e., Utah County) even more important, and that below-average population growth has made rural Utah and the northern part of the Wasatch Front somewhat less important. One piece of good news for us is that all of the new districts are potentially “gettable” because they include population centers where signature-gathering at liquor stores and other venues is viable, e.g., District #1 includes Brigham City, District #2 includes Logan, District #11 includes Tooele, District #20 includes Park City, District #26 includes Moab and areas near Provo, and Districts #27-29 converge around St. George and Hurricane.

Also good news: We can now work on improving our legal language, getting a bill introduced in the legislative session that starts in January (a bill is unlikely to pass but would still move the public conversation forward), and doing more outreach around the state, especially around St George and in Utah County!

PS. We are looking to host interns to help flesh out the campaign plan and otherwise move the campaign forward. Like the rest of our campaign this is unpaid, but students may be able to get course credit at the U of U and maybe other schools as well. Please help spread the word!
