Hello clean-air-and-climate friends:

It’s been a week since we got our signature packets and hit the streets, and this much is clear: getting signatures for a clean air ballot measure at outdoor events where lots of people are standing around is fun and easy and tremendously productive: up to 80 signatures an hour! (To use an odd and not terribly environmentally friendly metaphor, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel.) So please please please come join us for signature gathering around the state around the 4th of July! Just email bob@DarnAir.org or sign up directly here. Gather 250 signatures and you’ll get a cartoon book and other prizes as part of your induction into the 250 Club. (PS. Other events listed here, including the Red Butte Concert tonight, July 2. Email bob@DarnAir.org for details.)

Fox 13 News and Governor Herbert: Check out last night’s story on Fox 13 News from reporter Ben Winslow. It features Bob Cieri out gathering signatures, and also Governor Herbert saying that he’s open to considering the idea: “I’m not supporting it, I’m not opposed to it. I’m willing to have the discussion.” Thank you Governor Herbert for being willing to have the discussion, and for championing $100m for air quality last session (even if the legislature allocated only $29m and instead allocated $110m for a parking garage and other improvements at the State Capitol). And PS. If you don’t think Governor Herbert’s willingness to have the discussion is noteworthy, check out the Twitter meme reaction from reporter Ben Winslow.

Tales from the Trails: We’re going to regularly feature stories from signature gatherers, and this first installment focuses on our awesome signboards (seen here at KRCL). They’re a walking advertisement: Dave Carrier says that he was just walking down the street with one when someone ran after him to sign up. They’re a shield: if you’re shy or hesitant to talk to folks on the street, the signboard says it all. (Check out Bob Cieri on Fox 13 News.) They’re even convertible into a sandwich board: just take two signboards and connect them with clear packaging tape and you’ll have both hands free for handing out multiple signature boards to all the folks who will come running after you! (Follow the link for a photo and tips, and if you don’t have a signboard or need help just contact your chapter leader or email us directly at info@DarnAir.org)

Emissionaries: Our emissionaries program provides a $500 incentive to supporters who pledge to put in 40 solid hours gathering signatures (which should translate to 1000 signatures… or much more at 80 signatures an hour!), so please tell interested young people (18+ in age) and others to contact info@DarnAir.org if they’re interested. And thanks to our new emissionary sponsors who have given $500 to support the program: Warren KunzBryan Dixon & Jean Lown, and David Ibarra (who we’re listing for the second week in a row because he’s sponsoring two emissionaries, and Yes he’s running for Salt Lake City mayor).  Thank you!!
